Who can audition: Chicago Folks Operetta is seeking children ages 5 to 18 for its Children’s Operetta Workshop (COW) production of “Babes in Toyland”, music by Victor Herbert. The show will be taught as an 8-week workshop ending in 4 performances: December 6, 7 and 8 at the 19th Century Club of Oak Park. Workshop participants will be involved in a full-scale production including costumes, make-up and sets, as well as work with professional opera singers from the Chicago area. The workshop instructors will include Alison Kelly, Gerald Frantzen and TBA.

Who can participate: COW is seeking enthusiastic children between the ages of 5 and 18 to sing and do light movement. Some roles may require dance.  There are numerous parts available including BoPeep, Sallie Waters, Miss Muffet, Curly Locks, Red Riding Hood, Fairy, Simple Simon, Gonzorgo, Peter Peter Pumpkin Eater, Tommy Tucker, Jack & Jill, Boy Blue, Bobby Shaftoe, Marmaduke, French Dolls, Dutch Dolls, Drummers, Toy Soldiers, etc.

Professional opera singers will be playing the roles of Barnaby, Alan, Jane, Tom Tom, Contrary Mary and Gertrude.

What to sing: We hear everything from Happy Birthday to songs from musicals and operettas.  Sing the song that shows off your voice the best and that you feel good singing!   Young children can sing a short song they know a cappella.  An accompanist will be provided for older children if they wish to sing with a piano (please bring the sheet music) or they can sing a cappella. No previous stage experience necessary.

Workshop Rehearsals: Once a week in October on Sunday afternoons beginning October 20th and twice a week on Saturday and Sunday afternoons in November beginning Nov 2. The workshop classes, divided by age and group, will be as follows: 5-8 year olds will rehearse from 1:30-2:30 PM; 9-12 year olds will rehearse from 2:30-3:30 PM; 10-18 year olds will rehearse from 3:30-4:30 PM on Saturday afternoons. Sunday rehearsals will combine the age groups and be from 1:30-4:30 PM. Each child may not be needed the entire time on Sundays depending on what scenes will be worked on and the youngest children will be let out earlier than the rest. If a child has a larger role which interacts with adult singers/actors, they may need to rehearse on occasion with the adults during the week. All rehearsals will take place at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Oak Park. Dress rehearsals at the 19th Century Club will be Dec 3, Dec 4 and Dec 5 from 4-7:30 PM.

Performances: Performances will be Dec 6 at 7 PM, Dec 7 at 11 AM and 3 PM and Dec 8 at 2 PM at the 19th Century Club in Oak Park.

Workshop cost: $280 per child and is due at the first rehearsal. (check, cash or credit card)
